Zamboanga City Implements Monkeypox Response Plan
ZAMBOANGA CITY – The Zamboanga City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council recently convened an emergency meeting to discuss proactive and response efforts on the presence of monkeypox in some Mindanao provinces. The council focused on enhancing the Zamboanga City Preparedness and Response Plan, monkeypox surveillance, and protocols for prevention, especially in workplaces and high-risk commercial areas.
Mayor John Dalipe led the meeting where officials reviewed how the city will handle potential cases and prevent further spread. Emphasizing coordinated efforts, the council aims to ensure that the community remains safe while minimizing disruptions to daily life.
Current Situation and Contact Tracing Efforts
Local health authorities confirmed ongoing contact tracing activities for residents along the city’s east coast. These efforts target individuals who may have come into contact with a confirmed monkeypox case involving a three-year-old child from Tungawan, Zamboanga Sibugay. According to community health sources, no cases have yet been reported within Zamboanga City itself.
Despite circulating rumors about a possible lockdown due to monkeypox, health officials have reassured the public that no such measure is planned at this time. They advise anyone with suspected symptoms to immediately report to the nearest health facility or contact the City Health Office hotline for proper evaluation and response.
Preparedness Measures and Facilities
Health officials also highlighted that existing COVID-19 isolation facilities could be repurposed to accommodate monkeypox patients if cases arise locally. This approach would allow the city to manage potential infections efficiently without overwhelming healthcare resources.
Community leaders said that continuous monitoring and public education remain vital components of the city’s strategy to prevent monkeypox transmission. The Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council remains vigilant and ready to adjust protocols as necessary to protect public health.
