Zubiri Calls on Marcos for Clear Online Gaming Ban Stand
Senator Juan Miguel Zubiri has urged President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. to clearly state his position on the ongoing calls to ban or regulate online gambling in the Philippines. This appeal comes as the country faces increasing debate over the future of digital gaming platforms.
During his previous State of the Nation Address, President Marcos ordered a ban on Philippine offshore gaming operators (Pogos), a move he later confirmed with an executive order in November 2024. Now, Zubiri hopes the President will take a similar firm stance on online gambling when he addresses the nation on July 28.
Political Will Needed for Online Gambling Ban
At a recent Kapihan sa Senado forum, Zubiri emphasized the importance of the President’s position on this issue. “It’s important to hear the stand of the President on this. It really is important,” he said.
He noted that banning online gambling would require significant political courage because, unlike the Pogo ban which primarily affected foreign operators, this time the restrictions would mostly impact Filipino citizens. Still, Zubiri believes that if Marcos succeeds in banning online gaming, it would demonstrate “great leadership.”
Calls to End Online Gaming Gain Momentum
“Let’s stop online gaming. I would love to hear that from the President, even in the State of the Nation address or some sort of statement saying that let us allow Congress to study the ban on online gaming,” Zubiri said, urging action against the fast-growing industry.
Many senators are divided between supporting a total ban or advocating for stricter regulation. However, Zubiri pointed out that the proponents of online gambling include “very wealthy and powerful” individuals who lobby heavily to maintain the status quo.
“It’s going to be a tough fight. Hindi pa nagpe-flex ng muscle mga magla-lobby against the banning,” Zubiri warned, acknowledging the strong opposition likely to arise.
Public Support Key in Fighting Online Gambling
Despite the challenges, Zubiri called on the public to join him in this fight. He pledged to stand firm against online gambling, regardless of the backlash. “Let them be mad at me if they want. There are really a lot of billionaires who will be affected here, and I think we all know how they play the game,” he remarked.
As the debate continues, many await President Marcos’ upcoming address for a clearer direction on this pressing issue.
